Sequence

Victimae paschali laudes

Christians, to the Paschal Victim
Offer your thankful praises!
A Lamb the sheep redeems;
Christ, who only is sinless,
Reconciles sinners to the Father.
Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous:
The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal.
Speak, Mary, declaring
What you saw, wayfaring.
“The tomb of Christ, who is living,
The glory of Jesus’ resurrection;
bright angels attesting,
The shroud and napkin resting.
Yes, Christ my hope is arisen;
to Galilee he goes before you.”
Christ indeed from death is risen, our new life obtaining.
Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning!
Amen. Alleluia.

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

on Fasting

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to

eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

CRS Rice Bowl is one way Catholics can enhance their Lenten fasting practice by giving up meals and donating the cost of those meals to Catholic Relief Services in order to help those who do not have enough to eat.

Building Bridges, Not Fences

BUILDING BRIDGES, NOT FENCES

Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into a conflict.

It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch.

Then the long collaboration fell apart.

It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally, it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenters toolbox. “I’m looking for a few day’s work,” he said, “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help with? Could I help you?”

“Yes,” said the older brother. “I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbor, in fact, it’s my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us.

Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I’ll go him one better. See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence—an 8-foot fence—so I won’t need to see his place or his face anymore.”

The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post digger and I’ll be able to do the job that pleased you.

The older brother had to go to town, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready, and then he was off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing.

About sunset the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. The was no fence there at all. It was a bridge—a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work handrails and all –and the neighbor, his brother was coming across, his hand outstretched.

The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder wait! Stay a few days.

I have a lot of other projects for you”, said the older brother. “I’d love to stay on”, the carpenter said, but I have many more bridges to build.”

Special Prayers + Intentions

PRAYER FOR SAFETY IN HURRICANE SEASON

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children.

The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude.

You are still the Master of the land and sea.  We live in the shadow of danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster.

During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father.  Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask to plead with your Son on our behalf so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm less eternity awaits.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR OUR SERVICEMEN and Women

Star of the Sea shine brightly down

Upon our sailor men

Guide them to victory  and sagely home again.

When sholdiers battle on the field

When they in trenches go,

Oh Mary lovely Queen of Peace

Protect them from the foe.

Oh help of Morining Christian star

Guide them with your saving rays

The skyways where our pilots are

In flight by night and day

Oh Mary lovely Queen of Peace

Sweet Mother of God’s Son

Grant that the world wide war may cease

And freedoms cause can be won.

Amen

Prayer to Accept God’s Will

Lord Jesus, in Your agony You uttered the prayer, “Not My will, but Yours be done”.  Help me to resign myself to the Father’s will with such humility and love.  Grant that I may perceive the things that I can change in my life; give me the help to accept those things I cannot change.

I know You will permit only that which will lead to my salvation and that of others.  Help me to accept with a joyful and humble heart the good things You send.  Help me to accept too, the cross which I must bear in union with You.  I as this, Lord, in Your name.  Amen.

St Gabriel Catholic Church

A Vibrant Faith Community in Christ

Parish History

Established in 1967, Saint Gabriel serves the faith and spiritual needs of the Catholic community in Pompano Beach and Hillsboro Beach.

St. Gabriel Beginnings

Through hard work, sacrifice, and dedication, parishioners constructed a rectory and a church with an elegant blue tile roof and ceramic doors made by two California aunts of Father Thomas Goggin, the first pastor. Parishioners also established a religious education program.

St. Gabriel Today

The tile roof remains but the harsh sea and salty air took their toll on the original doors.  In 2017, the doors were replaced with the beautiful doors you see today.

The parish may be South Florida’s first to initiate a Parish Nurse/Health program in conjunction with Holy Cross Hospital, to serve the frail elderly.

Situated in the heart of Pompano Beach on A1A, just across the street from the beach, St Gabriel’s community is a blend of cultures, ages, and ethnicities.

St Gabriel is blessed to serve as a vibrant year-round parish for about a 1,000 families, which swells during “season” when we welcome our seasonal parishioners home.

Saint Gabriel’s spiritual life is embodied in prayer and our community outreach. St Gabriel offers parishioners many opportunities to participate in parish life – Bible study, prayer groups, Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Respect Life, the frail elderly, and many others.

PRAYER FOR GRANDPARENTS

Lord Jesus, you were born of the Virgin Mary,

The daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne.

Look with love on grandparents the world over.

For families for the Church and for all of society.

Support them!  As they grow older,

May they continue to be for their families

Strong pillars of Gospel faith, guardians of noble

Domestic ideals, living treasures of sound religious,

Traditions.  Make them teachers of wisdom and courage,

That they may pass on to future generations the fruits

Of their mature human and spiritual experience.

Lord Jesus, help families and society

To value the presence and role of grandparents.

May they never be ignored or excluded

But always encounter respect and love.

Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed

In all the years of life which you give them.

Mary, Mother of all the living keep grandparents

Constantly in your care, accompany them on their

Earthly pilgrimage and by your prayers, grant

That all families may one day be reunited in our heavenly

Homeland where you await all humanity for the

Great embrace of life without end.

Amen
