Looking for a Few good Men

St. Gabriel Men’s Club is Actively Recruiting New Members.

2020 was a crazy year. With COVID shutdowns,  quarantines, and the need for social distancing, many things changed for all of us and the St Gabriel Men’s Club was no different.

COVID created some unique challenges for the Men’s Club, the majority of our loyal volunteers are in their 80’s and 90’s putting them at high-risk for catching the virus.  Additionally, many of our volunteers are at a point in their lives that makes volunteer work difficult or impossible.

We Need New Members – New Friends to Help Us Serve our Parish.

The parish and Father Nathan is so grateful for all the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.  We wish them all the best of everything as they begin new chapters in their lives.

We need new volunteers to be the lifeblood of our mission and to help us grow vibrantly and continue to serve.

Calling all men in the parish
Seasonal or Full-time — The Parish and The men’s Club needs You!

— you are welcome, you are needed and you will make a difference, have fun, and make friends.

Young or old, new to the parish or not…all men are welcome, but young guys in their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s would be a great start!

Our Fundraising Activities Continue

At the end of 2020, it appeared that the 400 Club was the only fundraising activity that would be possible. We were lucky and were able to sell out all 400 Club Tickets before the end of December.

We were also creative and found other safe ways to fundraise so we could continue our mission.

COVID has left many people hurting, lonely, and in need, and we need more capable men to help us.

Can you find it in your heart to give a couple of hours a week to help us grow and serve?

When the pandemic restrictions are removed the Men’s Club meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month (October through May) in the parish hall.   The meeting time is 7:00 PM followed by coffee and sweets.

We look forward to welcoming all our new members soon!

Acquisition of the Zimmer/Electric Pipe Organ

Andrew Reed, Musical Director at St. Gabriel, was once the organist at St. Marks in the Field Chuch located by the Atlantic Blvd. Bridge in Pompano Beach. During his time there, he played their Zimmer Pipe/Electronic Organ, an amazing musical instrument!

In 2019, a decision was made to close St. Marks Church and sell the property. Andrew became aware of the situation and started to explore the idea of acquiring their Zimmer Organ for St. Gabriel Church.

After consulting with St. Marks, Cornell Zimmer, the builder of the organ; Fr. Nathan and the Men’s Club, it was decided that the Men’s Club would help fund the move and installation of the organ.

At that time, Cornell Zimmer said that the organ was worth about $100,000. To replace it with a brand new organ would cost more than $200,000. We could get it by simply paying the moving and installation costs!

The move from St Marks to the Parish Hall at St.Gabriel was supervised by Cornell Zimmer. However, after a few weeks, the organ had to be moved again because a Polish Night was planned to take place in the hall, and space was needed.

After a few months in storage, the organ was again returned to St. Gabriel and moved and stored in the church, but was never installed.

Unfortunately, fundraising for the installation of the Zimmer Organ has been delayed due to the COVID-19.

When we solve the funding problem, we will be able to explore two basic installation options:

– Since the Organ Pipes were not part of the gift to St. Gabriel, we will not have a concert-quality organ if we install only the parts that we have. The organ will be functional, but not really complete!

– The second option requires an investment in more software, electronics, speakers, and other options. This will bring the Zimmer Organ up to concert-quality, but at a much greater expense.

We must now make a decision as to what to do next. An asset like this organ cannot be left unused!

Creation and Dedication of a Military Honor Roll

Back in 2010, one of our parishioners asked if there was a place where she could post a photo of her grandson who was serving in the Marine Corps. She wanted to see his photo when she prayed for his safe return. A bulletin board was set up, and that was the beginning of the St. Gabriel Miltary Honor Roll.

More and more parishioners added photos of their active duty family members. Photos of veterans were also being added. Soon it became apparent that a bulletin board with photos was not adequate … a more permanent solution was needed.

The Men’s Club took it upon itself to deal with the situation.

A board with brass plates engraved with the names of our brave soldiers was built to honor our military heroes. On August 15 -16, 2020, Fr. Nathan and Deacon Bill dedicated the Honor Roll with 88 names. This included two who were killed in action, active duty personnel, and veterans from all wars dating back to WWII.

An Honor Guard of Boy Scouts also participated in the dedication ceremony.

The Tradition Will continue

Each year around November 11 (Veterans Day) more names will be added to the Military Honor Roll.

Applications for inclusion in the next update are available in the rear of the church.

There is no cost to the applicant or family.
