Solemnity of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother.
– a Holy Day of Obligation
Thursday 14th vigil Mass and, on the 15th, we will have mass at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.
This week we are going to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother. That means it’s a Holy Day of Obligation. On Thursday 14th, we will have a vigil Mass and, on the 15th , we will have 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Masses.
Please plan to keep the day of obligation. The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated on August 15th, commemorates the belief that the Virgin Mary was taken up into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life.
The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a major Christian celebration, particularly within the Catholic Church.
It honors the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was assumed into heaven at the end of her life, a doctrine formally defined as a dogma of faith by Pope Pius XII in 1950 through the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus. This declaration stated that Mary, having completed her earthly life, was taken up into heavenly glory, body and soul.
Let us pray to learn the background of this feast. The origins of the Feast of the Assumption can be traced back to early centuries of Christianity, with celebration of Mary’s Dormition (or “Falling Asleep”) occurring as early as the 5th century. The feast was officially recognized in the Eastern Church before being adopted in the West, where it was celebrated in Rome by the 7th century.
Over time, the Assumption became a significant feast day, with various popes emphasizing its importance within the liturgical calendar. The Feast of the Assumption is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics, meaning we are required to attend Mass on this day. Celebrations often include processions, special prayers, and the decoration of churches with flowers in honor of Mary. In addition to attending Mass, many Catholics participate in novenas and other forms of prayer dedicated to Mary, reflecting on her role in salvation history and her intercessory power.
In the first year of my priesthood, I had the privilege of being an associate at the Assumption Cathedral. We did all of the above. It was a wonderful and memorable time in my life.
The Feast of the Assumption serves as a reminder of Mary’s unique role in the Christian faith and special relationship with God. It is a day of joy and hope, celebrating the belief that, like Mary, all believers are called to eternal life with God. The feast encourages the faithful to draw closer to God through Mary’s example and intercession.
With lots of love and blessings.
Ever wanting to be faithful to your service,
— Fr. Sahayanathan Nathan
